The transformative power of reading: Tenisha Joseph | My Bookmark

December 5, 2024

by 成人直播

Tenisha Joseph (she/her) is the talent manager here at 成人直播. Her first memory connected to reading is from Pre-K when her teacher, Ms. Flood, would read to her class during story time. 鈥淪he always wore a long dress that was eye level with us as we gathered around her rocking chair,鈥 Tenisha says. 鈥淚 remember being in awe of how she brought the stories to life as a narrator, creating such an immersive experience.鈥

As a kid, Tenisha loved . 鈥淚 loved it for the beauty of the fish, especially the glitter. I have always adored sparkles and shiny things,鈥 she says. 鈥淔rom a young age, I was drawn to the idea of learning lessons and self-improvement. I admired how the beautiful rainbow fish learned a lesson that brought him happiness, more friends, and ultimately love. I鈥檝e always been a huge lover of all things heartfelt!鈥

Nowadays, her reading journey is a bit different. When she first started reading, she was drawn to simple stories and colorful illustrations. While those kinds of stories succeeded in sparking her imagination and a love for storytelling, she has since become more interested in character development, new perspectives, and knowledge gained from seeing the world through someone else鈥檚 eyes.聽

When thinking about what kids’ books she wished were around when she was a child, several come to mind. The first is by Matthew A. Cherry. She loves how it celebrates Black hair and the bond between a father and daughter. 鈥淚t emphasizes love, confidence, and creativity, showcasing the importance of representation.鈥

Tenisha also admires Sulwe by Lupita Nyong’o, a book that addresses themes of self-acceptance and beauty, encouraging young readers to embrace their unique features. Its message about loving oneself is powerful and much-needed.聽

I Am Enough by Grace Byers sticks out as an uplifting book that celebrates self-acceptance and encourages children to embrace who they are, highlighting the importance of confidence and resilience.聽

Last, but not least, by Tami Charles is a heartfelt book that reassures children of their worth and importance, conveying a powerful message about love and belonging.

Tenisha believes that books can play a crucial role in empowering young students. 鈥淩epresentation allows students to see themselves reflected in stories, fostering a sense of belonging and validation,鈥 she says. 鈥淭he empathy and understanding gained from reading about different cultures, experiences, and perspectives help students develop a broader worldview and appreciate the diversity around them.鈥

鈥淢ost importantly to me, literature provides emotional support,鈥 she says. 鈥淭here is a level of comfort and guidance that reading offers during difficult times. Characters facing challenges can help students navigate their feelings and experiences, providing a sense of connection and hope. Overall, books can be transformative, helping young students build confidence, empathy, and a sense of agency as they navigate the world around them.”
